Are you seeking for real adventures?
Time Lapland is a thrilling experience, but as in every destination you need to get the maximum of it. To experience a real Lapland, you need to sit next to the fireplace with hot cocoa in your palms, to run naked from a sauna into the cold lake or to be brave enough to jump straight to the pile of snow. To spend a while laying on the frozen lake and watching Northern Lights, feeling every possible snowflake on your face and taking every possible experience that Lapland can offer for you. Time spent in a cottage near the Rovajärvi lake in a very north of Finnish Lapland, near the Otsamo fell, can be a real adventure and cherry on top of your time in Lapland.
Getting there or how to survive walking in Lapland
Rovajärvi lake situated 10 kilometers from the Inari town in Finland and around 340 kilometers from the tourist attraction Rovaniemi town. So, far from the throws of city life, somewhere in the middle of Lapland’s woods. Reaching the Rovajärvi lake can be a challenging experience, but if you have suitable winter clothes, functional boots and maybe a pair of snowshoes, 8 kilometers walk gets more comfortable. However, if you already decided that this experience either is not for you because you do not like walking or you are scared that White Walkers will find you, I can settle you down – walking is nice in snowy Lapland’s woods with snow shining like small crystals. So White Walkers? I think they are Jon Snow’s business.
Settling down or chopping wood for the fireplace
Eight kilometers will pass quickly and when you see the cozy wooden cottage standing near the frozen lake – that’s the place. From there, the incredible experience of surviving Lapland starts. Have you ever tried to chop wood and make a fireplace? Drill the frozen lake ice to have drinkable water? Let’s not forget about heating the sauna for the evening joy as a real Finn.
The biggest excitement comes in the night while waiting for the Aurora to show up. The hot Finnish sauna is a must in Lapland. Also, if you put some aroma oils on the hot sauna stones – voilà you have the best SPA in your life. The jump into the ice hall in Rovajärvi lake is a significant experience. However, to survive the cold of water you need to stay in sauna as long as you can, and just when you will start to feel that you cannot handle it anymore, put your socks on your feet (it is painful to run barefoot till the lake) close your eyes and jump! Everyone should try this at least once in their lifetime.
Evening meditation or Aurora show time
The late evening is for the queen of the north’s – for the Aurora or in other words, for the Northern Lights. It is hard to describe with words the feeling when you first time in your life sees the Aurora. Magic, green and shining – the Aurora light can be so intense that in seconds surroundings starts to glow. Put your overalls, lay down for some minutes on the frozen lake and enjoy every second spent watching Northern Lights.
Morning glory or the view from 418 meters fell
Mornings in Lapland is always cold, especially if you forget to throw some wood in the fireplace. A perfect warm up – 418 meters tall Otsamo fell. Otsamo fell, in the Finnish language – Otsamotunturi, situated next to Rovajärvi lake, on the other side of Rovajärvi cottage. As you can imagine, there is much snow in Lapland, and it can be very fluffy; therefore, you can accidentally fell into the snow up to your waist – thus the snowshoes are a perfect choice. Climbing to the fell takes around 2-4 hours depending on you and weather conditions. Going up the fell is not too hard, and the view from the peak is touching, particularly during the sunsets. After climbing with the roaring appetite, the evening can be spent listening to stories from your travel buds, roasting sausages or toasting marshmallows.
Time spent near the Rovajärvi lake gives you an epitome of Lapland’s incredible beauty. Its a perfect gateway from your daily life and routine. Thus, if you ever thought that Lapland is just a cold place in the North, I can assure you – it is the place where dreams are made of.
